Runjhun Deoras

Vice President, External Relations

Introduction

Hello MacEng! I am Runjhun Deoras, your current VP Communications, and I am running to be your Vice President External for this upcoming year. I am in my 3rd year of Mechanical Engineering and I have had an amazing experience being part of the maceng culture and community so far. I have been part of the Wellness committee, a graphics designer and currently I am part of MSME, McMaster Rocketry Team and MES.

I first learnt about conferences last year when I got the chance to design all of the branding, merch and pamphlets fot McMaster's annual Leadership Development Conference (LDC). Being part of a team that put together a conference was a crazy experience and everyone felt very accomplished! Not long after that I had the opportunity to attend multiple CFES conferences like Conference in Diversity in Engineering (CDE) and the Canadian Engineering Leadership Conference (CELC). Through these conferences and talks with our current VPX Isra, I was able to learn a lot about engineering societies at local, provincial and national levels. I had the chance to sit in on various General Assemblies at the National level a CELC and learn about Governance and interact with other VP Externals from around Canada.

I want to be able to make conferences available so more people fond of engineering societies, leadership and travelling, get to experience what I did! This is why I am running to be your next VP External and I hope to advocate for McMaster Engineering all over Canada!

Campaign Platform

1. Inclusivity

My main goal for this year is to make conferences a posibility for everyone! This means inclusivity in all aspects. After having conversations with other universities, it came to my attention that most of the Engineering Societies cover all of the cost for conferences for their delegates. This meant everyone had the chance to attend, travel, and experience a conference. This year, I plan on working with the VP Finance to come up with a strategy to help cover most (at least 75%) of the conference and travel costs for delegates. In addition, I would maintain the fair judgement of delegation selection committees and eliminate any bias.

2. Awareness

This year, I learnt that not many people are aware of Conferences at Mac Eng! As the past VP Communications, I believe I have the skills and network to help spread awareness about conferences at McMaster. This year I worked closely with the VPX and LDC Conference coordinators to implement IG story takeovers and reels on our Instagram account which I plan on continuing next year if elected as VP External. I also plan on working closely with the McMaster Faculty of Engineering and doing IG Takeovers for bigger conferences like CELC. This would help gauge a larger audience and help spread awareness to all of McMaster Engineering!

3. Advocacy

As your VP External, my primary responsibilities would be to advocate for MacEng at conferences and any events internal or external. I plan on working alonside the VP Student Life and VP Internal to help understand how we can give you the best undergraduate experience possible. I will also meet with other VPXs from different universities to see what type of events they do or how they run their governance meetings, etc to learn and make our time at MacEng worthwhile!
